In 2026, we will highlight a significant moment in our collective history: the 40th anniversary of the Francophone flag of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Since its adoption in 1986, our flag has represented much more than a visual symbol. It embodies our language, our culture, our resilience, our diversity and our commitment to promoting the French language in our province.

Forty years later, we invite you to take part in a series of unifying activities to celebrate together our Francophone heritage, our community achievements and our future.

Of May 28 to June 1, 2026, Several celebratory events will take place at St. John (NL) in order to highlight this important milestone.

THURSDAY, MAY 28, 2026 – 11 AM

Official raising of the flag at St. Jean Town Hall

Location: St. John's Town Hall
10 New Gower Street, St. John, NL

The celebrations will begin with an official flag-raising ceremony at City Hall. This formal occasion will highlight the historical and ongoing contributions of the Francophone and Acadian community of Newfoundland and Labrador.

An opportunity to demonstrate our collective pride and to showcase our presence in the province.

FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2026 – 9 AM

Flag raising ceremony at the Grands-Vents School and Community Centre

Location: Grands-Vents Community Center
65 Ridge Road, St. John, NL

Students, families, school staff and community members are invited to participate in this unifying event.

This activity will highlight the importance of passing on our language and culture to future generations.

FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2026 – 11 AM

Raising of the flag at Parliament

Location: Confederation Building
100 Prince Philip Drive
St. John (NL)

An official ceremony will take place at the Provincial Parliament to highlight the important place of the Francophonie in the cultural and community landscape of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This celebration will also be an opportunity to recall the progress made over the past forty years.

SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2026 – 6:30 PM

Community Improvisation Match

Location: Grands-Vents Community Center
65 Ridge Road, St. John, NL

Make way for fun, creativity and bursts of laughter.

Come and join us for a friendly evening where humor, spontaneity and community spirit will be on display.

This activity is open to everyone.

MONDAY, JUNE 1, 2026

Community holiday

To mark this period of celebration, a special day will be dedicated to the community.

Please note that the extracurricular service will continue to be offered according to the scheduled timetable.

The Francophone flag of Newfoundland and Labrador is a symbol of belonging and continuity.

For four decades, it has been a reminder of our collective history, our cultural diversity, our commitment to the Francophonie and our desire to build a strong and inclusive future.

These celebrations are an opportunity for us to come together, share our pride and continue the development of our community together.
