The Galette des Rois: A Gourmet Tradition
The galette des rois is a traditional pastry that marks Epiphany, celebrated on January 6. It is a convivial moment, often shared with family or friends. Made of puff pastry, it is generally filled with frangipane, a cream made from almonds and butter, although some regional variations use other fillings such as apple or chocolate.
The ritual surrounding the galette des rois includes inserting a bean into the dough. Whoever discovers the bean in their slice becomes the "king" or "queen" of the day and wears a paper crown. Traditionally, the galette is cut into equal parts, but an additional part, called the "poor man's part", is reserved for a guest or a child, depending on local customs. It is therefore an opportunity to share a festive moment and perpetuate a beautiful tradition.
