In December, the scent of mulled wine and cinnamon fills the Christmas markets that have been springing up all over Europe and here at home for the past few years.
It is said that it is a pagan Germanic goddess named Berchta who is said to be the origin of the legend of Christkindel. From the 14th century onwards, the Germans gathered to honour her in the Christkindelsmärik, which in German means “Christmas markets”. In France, the market in Strasbourg is THE reference. People have been visiting its stalls since 1570, but there is even older, since the first market in Vienna took place on 6 December 1294. Unfortunately, several Christmas markets fell into oblivion until the tradition was revived in the mid-1990s. It was at this time that the renaissance reached Quebec.
